Positive pressure/roof cavity heat transfer ventilation systems
Positive pressure/ Roof cavity ventilation systems are the most common type available in New Zealand. They force filtered air from the roof space into the house through a single, or multiple, ceiling vents. This pushes air inside the house out through gaps around doors and windows and other leakage areas.
HEAT TRANS systems are specifically designed to utilise your excess heat by transferring it from your source room, which is usually your lounge, and distributing it to other rooms in your home. If you have ever found yourself "HOT" in one room, while the rest of the house may be unbearably cold, then this is the system you need!
By transferring your excess heat you are able to 'take the chill off' your bedrooms, and as a result create a warm comfortable environment for your family. HEAT TRANS systems are known for their "whisper quiet" operation. They are the only system on the market to include acoustic insulated ducting, used to achieve maximum heat transfer with minimum noise.
Balanced pressure heat recovery ventilation systems
Balanced pressure heat recovery ventilation systems are particularly suitable for homes in colder areas of the country, if they are already well heated and if they are reasonably airtight. These systems have two fans for two separate air streams. One fan supplies fresh outdoor air into the house through several ceiling vents, while the exhaust fan extracts an equal volume of air from inside the house and discharges it to the outside. Some of the heat from the exhaust air is transferred to the incoming air in a heat exchange unit, usually located in the roof cavity.
Sort your bathroom, kitchen and laundry ventilation
Make sure you have good extraction systems in the wet areas in the home (bathroom, laundry and kitchen). Fans or extractors need to vent to outside your house, not just recirculate damp air, or vent it to your ceiling space. Extractor fans need to be sized and located properly for the size and type of room.
Leaving the bathroom window open slightly allows airflow into the bathroom and will improve the extractor fan's effectiveness. After a shower, let the fan run for a few more minutes. Clean your extractor fans regularly to maintain their performance.
